In the beginning don’t worry about how you will organize what you write. Write ideas down because writing them down is strictly better than not writing them down.

The only concern is to set things up to make writing easy, and so improve the odds you will sustain the habit.

I have a PhD, and I have an uncomfortable feeling everytime I read articles like this.. The feeling isn’t because I am not aware of these tricks and pitfalls. It’s because I don’t truly know them, to the point where they’re drilled into me, second nature. I don’t truly know them because I was never formally taught them. They were just things I picked up in lay reading. High schools should have a class to cover this particular skillset.. But we don’t have such a class. Even though we have known about these skills for decades. The process by which the implications of scientific results percolate through the education system is basically broken.

It is good for communities to fragment. As the number of people on reddit increases (which is presumably desirable) its front page descends further into lowest-common denominator images and video, as everything of substance becomes interesting only to a minority and so gets pummelled soon after submission.

Zawinski’s law for the web: Every website expands until it becomes a social network. Websites that cannot so expand are replaced by ones which can.

I maintain my todo lists and project plans as text files in version control, configured to automatically take a snapshot when I exit my text editor. This lets me look back over how my todo lists turn over. Their evolution provides a pretty good indicator of how I change over time.

Building something is easy. Evaluating what you build is hard. Iterate between the two as fast as you can.
