The game was a clear-cut one: Hayden wanted Machinist’s money, and Machinist didn’t want to give it, or even commit to giving it, until he absolutely had to, until all the risk factors could be assessed, until every last bit of leverage could be accrued - if then. This was Machinist’s real craft: Make people think you are ready and able to give them money, so ready and so able that they will reveal themselves totally, prostrate themselves completely. So that by the time you do give them the money, if you give them the money, it will be on absolutely the most favorable conditions imaginable.
