..one million women are stalked in the U.S. every year. In two-thirds of the cases where a female victim asks for a police protective order, that order is violated.. One third of female murder victims are killed by an intimate partner. 76 percent of these had been stalked by the partner in the year prior to their murder. Murder ranks second (after accidents) as the leading cause of death among young women. Murder is the number one cause of death of pregnant women in the United States.

The game was a clear-cut one: Hayden wanted Machinist’s money, and Machinist didn’t want to give it, or even commit to giving it, until he absolutely had to, until all the risk factors could be assessed, until every last bit of leverage could be accrued - if then. This was Machinist’s real craft: Make people think you are ready and able to give them money, so ready and so able that they will reveal themselves totally, prostrate themselves completely. So that by the time you do give them the money, if you give them the money, it will be on absolutely the most favorable conditions imaginable.

In the course of a few hours, a plan had been put in place to make me one of the richest men in the country, partner me with one of the most blackened business names of the century, and fly me across the continent for dinner.
